How to Know if You Have a Cavity? (Signs of Tooth Decay)

Recognising the signs of a cavity is crucial for maintaining good oral health. From subtle white spots to sharp pains while eating, your teeth might be trying to alert you to a problem. Ignoring these signs can lead to more significant issues.

This guide will help you identify the key indicators of tooth decay so you can take proactive steps to preserve your dental well-being.

Early Signs of Tooth Decay

One of the initial indicators of tooth decay is the appearance of white spots on the surface of the teeth. These spots indicate that minerals are being lost from the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth.

If not addressed, these early signs can progress into a cavity, causing further damage to the tooth structure. Tooth decay occurs when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on the teeth, producing acids that attack the enamel.

Early Signs:

  • White Spots: Early demineralisation of enamel.
  • Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods or drinks.
  • Plaque Build-up: Sticky film on teeth leading to enamel erosion.

Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures is often one of the first signs of tooth decay. This discomfort happens when the protective enamel is compromised, exposing the dentin layer underneath.

When hot or cold substances come into contact with the affected tooth, it can trigger sharp, temporary pain. This indicates the tooth may be vulnerable to decay or damage.

Sensitivity Indicators:

  • Sharp Pain: Triggered by hot or cold foods and drinks.
  • Compromised Enamel: Indicates exposure of the inner dentin layer.

Action Steps:

  • Consult a dentist promptly for early detection and treatment.
  • Regular dental check-ups can help address these issues before they worsen.

Visible Holes or Pits on Teeth

Visible holes or pits on the surface of your teeth are clear indicators of tooth decay. These cavities can range from small to large and might appear as white spots or brown areas.

Signs of Visible Decay:

  • Holes or Pits: Damage on the tooth surface.
  • Colour Changes: White or brown spots indicating decay.
  • Discomfort: Pain or sensitivity when eating or drinking.

Preventive Measures:

  • Early consultation with a dentist to prevent worsening of the decay.
  • Regular monitoring of teeth for any changes in appearance.

Toothache or Pain While Chewing

Pain while chewing can be a sign of an advanced cavity. When decay penetrates deeper into the tooth, it can expose the inner pulp to bacteria, leading to infection and inflammation.

Pain Indicators:

  • Chewing Pain: Discomfort when biting down.
  • Persistent Pain: Varies from mild to severe.
  • Potential Complications: Risk of abscess formation if untreated.

Treatment Options:

  • Consult a dentist for a thorough examination.
  • Treatments like fillings or crowns can restore the tooth’s function.
