How Are Cavities Filled? Step-by-Step Guide to Dental Filling

Cavities, a common dental issue, are typically treated through a dental filling procedure. This process requires precision and care, starting from the initial assessment of the tooth to the final restoration of its function. Understanding the steps involved in filling cavities can help you appreciate the importance of timely dental care.

Here’s a straightforward guide on how dentists tackle cavities to maintain oral health.

Initial Examination and Diagnosis

The first step in treating a cavity is a thorough examination and diagnosis. Dentists assess the extent of decay and determine the most suitable treatment plan. This step typically includes:

  1. Visual Inspection: The dentist examines the tooth to identify any visible signs of decay.
  2. X-rays: X-rays may be taken to detect cavities not visible to the naked eye and assess damage extent.
  3. Assessment: Based on the findings, the dentist will determine the best filling material and method to restore the tooth.

Preparation of the Tooth

Once the diagnosis is complete, the dentist prepares the tooth for filling by removing the decayed portion. The preparation process includes:

  1. Numbing the Area: Local anaesthesia is administered to ensure the patient feels no discomfort during the procedure.
  2. Removal of Decay: The decayed part of the tooth is carefully removed using a dental drill.
  3. Shaping the Cavity: The cavity is shaped to eliminate all decay and create a surface to which the filling material can bond.
  4. Cleaning: The tooth is cleaned to remove any debris or bacteria.

Placement of the Filling Material

After the tooth is prepared, the filling material is placed to restore the tooth’s structure. The steps involved are:

  1. Choosing the Filling Material: Common materials include amalgam, composite resin, gold, or ceramic, depending on the location and size of the cavity, cost, and patient preferences.
  2. Layering the Material: The dentist layers the filling material into the cavity, ensuring it adheres well to the tooth.
  3. Shaping: The material is shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth.
  4. Curing: For materials like composite resin, a special light is used to harden the filling.

Final Polishing and Evaluation

The final step in the dental filling process involves polishing and evaluating the filled tooth. This step ensures that the restoration is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

  1. Polishing: The filled tooth is polished to smooth out any rough edges, ensuring the filling feels natural.
  2. Evaluation: The dentist checks the filled tooth to ensure proper sealing and alignment. The bite is also tested to ensure no issues when the teeth come together.
